Homemade Tortillas

Each week when we go to Classical Conversations the kids are asked to do a 'presentation'. This is to help them learn how to speak in front of others. They give ideas on what the kids can do their presentation on, or else they can come up with an idea of their own. It's kind of like show and tell- only they are asked to speak for at least 3 minutes, make good eye contact, not fidget, etc. I love that my kids are learning how to do this because public speaking is a huge fear for so many.

This week the girls wanted to learn about making tortillas from scratch like they do in Guatemala. We watched a video on how Masa is made. While we didn't grind our own field corn- we did get to pat our own tortillas and cook them on the griddle. Nothing like a warm tortilla with butter. :) Today the girls did a presentation on tortilla making for their Classical Conversations class. They did a little demonstration for the kids and let them try some of the tortilla they made. It was so cool to watch them sharing a part of their culture.

I love this part of homeschooling. :)

So yummy! And so wonderful that they are doing so much public speaking at such a young age! Good job, girls! (And mom too!) :)

P.S. Thanks for your nice comment!

That's so neat!

May I just say, I LOVE looking at pictures of your family-it is so neat to see so many different cultures and heritages represented, yet all united as one. I love the unique ways God knit's families together and I think your family is a beautiful testimony of His love.

Amy, can you share what you use for homeschooling? I"m schooling 5 with two little ones underfoot, and it can be a challenge!

The kids got to make homemade tortillas this year at Dillon's Guatemala weekend - it was Anna's favorite part! In fact, we had to rush right out and buy some masa when we got home so she could make some at home! They're also very tasty warm with honey!!

I love that last picture where little Miss Havyn looks like she is having so much fun and wants the picture taking to be done with so she can grab someone's tortilla. So cute! Thanks for sharing.
